Our project is to restore community access to Oakwood park playing fields after they were fenced off in 2017. For over 40 years prior to this the community used what is the only large green space in West Maidstone. Recreational use included walking, informal sports, keeping fit, running, dog walking, family picnics, learning to ride bicycles, a safe space for elders to keep active and socialise informally. We formed a registered charity and have negotiated with the schools and local council who fully support us and now need funding to enable the local community to have access.
We are particularly proud that this community inspired project has helped bring local people together in a shared effort to protect and make available a valuable green space. We are helping ourselves and future generations live an active, healthy lifestyle benefiting the community and wider society.
We will use money raised to buy and install gates together with a 700 metre hedge to make a separate dog walking "lane" and help encourage wildlife in a safe habitat.
