Refugee Connection are crowdfunding for their advocacy and casework clinic, that will provide free, quality advice for refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants, in the areas of immigration, welfare and housing.
In the current political climate our advocacy work is a vital life line for many people in crisis. The UK's 'hostile environment' has resulted in the financial and social marginalisation of refugees, asylums seekers and migrants, which often denies them safety and humanity. The expansion of data sharing, immigration enforcement, detention and deportations have greatly heightened the vulnerabilities of refugee and migrant communities in the UK, a situation the British Red Cross have called a 'humanitarian crisis'.
Your donation will help refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in times of crisis access specialist advice and support. By supporting Refugee Connection to advocate with and for refugee and migrant communities you will be helping us to mitigate the risk factors that make them much more vulnerable to homelessness, destitution and exploitation.
Cuts to legal aid, chronic underfunding and a sector stretched beyond capacity has resulted in some of the most marginalised in our society being completely excluded from legal support and access to justice.
Refugee Connection is responding directly to the needs of migrant and refugee communities by delivering a free advice and advocacy service, supporting and advocating for people who are not entitled to mainstream support and who often slip through the net. Our casework team are increasing their capacity, with the support of Refugee Action, to become qualified immigration advisers with the Office for Immigration Service Commissioner, which will allow us to support people with complex immigration needs within the scope of asylum and human rights.
Our clinics will offer a combination of one-off advice and ongoing casework support within the areas of immigration, asylum, welfare, housing, destitution and homelessness. Our advocacy team will support clients with their immigration and welfare concerns, to clarify their rights and entitlements, and offer support through times of crisis.
With your help we will have the capacity to provide an average of 7 hours of advice and casework for up to 200 people per year.
We treat everyone we work with as an individual rather than a case-number, welcoming them with dignity and respect to relieve some of the stress and isolation that comes hand in hand with forced migration.
In the past 12 months we have supported our advocacy clients by helping them access primary healthcare and specialist medical clinics, written letters of support, accompanied clients to benefit tribunals, helped them access legal aid advice, and provided ongoing support for asylum seekers who have been detained. We have provided support for victims of trafficking, provided free access to interpreters, made effective referrals to other frontline organisations and supported families on the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme.
We work with vulnerable adults and families from 17 different countries, who are socially isolated and often excluded from mainstream support. We have accepted referrals from NHS Trusts and specialist clinics, the British Red Cross and local councils across 12 London Boroughs. We will continue to work collaboratively within the sector towards common goals and to ensure that every refugee, asylum seeker and migrant has access to adequate and dignified living standards.
