I volunteer with Redwing CIC, a not-for-profit social enterprise arts and social space in Penzance, Cornwall and a new Redwing Housing Cooperative.
I would like to trial pay-as-you-feel take-away meals at the Redwing Arts and Community space in Penzance. When social distancing relaxes people will be able to socialise and eat the food in a relaxed restaurant/gallery setting without the pressure of a price list.
Although there are projects locally which provide free food for the homeless I know that there are people who would feel uncomfortable and embarrassed asking for charity and others who are struggling but not necessarily homeless.
There are also people who may be better off financially but who live alone, feel isolated and who do not bother to cook properly just for themselves.
The pay-as-you-feel community meal project will mix things up and remove any stigma and preconceptions as people will donate anonymously what they can for their meal. In addition to creating healthy meals for take-away we will decorate a beautiful space where people can look at art, meet new people and socialise when social distancing is relaxed.
What will we do?
The venue is lined up; the Redwing in Penzance is donating the use of its kitchen and art gallery.
We will reduce food waste locally by collecting and using donations of excess food from nearby supermarkets, producers and the community.
Excess food donations are great, but we will need to buy staples
Our target of £500 will purchase store cupboard essentials which, when put together with excess food donations, will create delicious plant-based meals.
We will need to purchase cooking and salad oil, pasta, flour, sugar,
Volunteers will create a pay-as-you-feel pop-up take-away restaurant for up to 20 local people each month for a year.
