Recording the debut Gareth Lockrane Big Band album

The acclaimed Gareth Lockrane Big Band is making its debut album with some of the UK's finest jazz and studio musicians-help to get it made!

We did it!

On 9th Nov 2016 we successfully raised £6,100 of £6,000 target with 136 supporters in 56 days

New stretch target

The additional money will go into the "band kitty" and will go towards subsidising a series of gigs around the UK in 2017/18 with the big band to promote the album!

The 19-piece Gareth Lockrane Big Band has been a regular fixture of the UK music scene since it made its debut in 2008 in the London Jazz Festival. Since then, it has been wowing audiences with its heady brew of contemporary jazz, funk, gospel and cinematic ballads featured in flautist/composer Gareth's original pieces for the band.

Their debut album has been a long time in the making but the time has finally come and they are to record in November 2016 for a release on the acclaimed independent modern jazz label, Whirlwind Recordings. The album is a large-scale followup to Gareth's last Grooveyard album for Whirlwind Recordings "The Strut" which won the accolade of Jazz Album of the Year of 2012 in Mojo magazine. The big band project is a natural evolution from his Grooveyard group ("Put The Cat Out" 2003 and "The Strut" 2012) and septet ("No Messin" 2010 Winner of Parliamentary Jazz Album of the Year) combining dynamic grooves with big melodies, lush harmonies and epic orchestration.

The new album will feature all-new compositions especially composed for the band and will feature some fantastic musicans, some of the finest players in the UK, including  Mike Outram (guitar) Ross Stanley (keyboards) Andy Greenwood, Tom Walsh, Henry Collins, Steve Fishwick (trumpets) Graeme Blevins (tenor sax) Sammy Mayne (alto sax) Mark Nightingale, Trevor Mires, Barnaby Dickinson (trombones) amongst others.

The various rewards include advance copies of the album, an exclusive download of beautifully recorded live tracks of the band, PDF scores/parts for Gareth's big band compositions old and new (or charts for Gareth's small group compositions from his other previous albums), and the chance to visit the recording session in November! Also thank you credits in the album notes, private lessons, and the chance of a private duo concert with Gareth and one of his team mates!

This is an exciting project for Gareth, the band and for the wider UK music scene, by far the most ambitious thing he has attempted and with the calibre of musicians on board is sure to result in a dynamic and memorable album - be part of the process and help to get it made!

Many thanks,

Gareth Lockrane
