Hello! I'm Chloe and I'm a Special Effects student at Wimbledon College of Art. I'm aiming to raise money to allow me to complete my current and final project of my degree, In Memoriam.
This project derives from my own experiences of death and mourning. Traditional death and mourning customs have interested me since the death of my eldest sister, Emily, who died at the age of 18. Witnessing someone with such vitality, a marked presence and influence in my life, become so suddenly and permanently absent from it, altered my perception of life and death entirely. Something which struck me in particular was how everyone felt the impact of her death except for Emily herself ― her demise belonged to everyone but her, yet it was something that isolated me from my peers and the outside world. As Emily was deaf and blind, she did not use social media like many people of my generation. This has put me in an interesting position in the 21st century, where I am one of few who continues to mourn and remember her through more authentic representations of her life, such as my own memories and the memories of others.
Using my technical abilities, I am in the process of producing a monument which will be displayed at my degree show in June. The purpose of this monument is to provide those in mourning with a space to remember those they have loved and lost, meanwhile producing a community of people with similar experiences. This space will be open to people of all religions to reflect on life and death as they wish.
The only way I can achieve this however, is if I have your support.
As a hard working student suffering from Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Type 3 and a myriad of other stemming illnesses, I have found it impossible to work outside of my 8:30am-8:30pm university hours. In addition to this, my Disability Living Allowance was stopped in April 2017 and I have been denied PIP on the grounds of being "well kempt", of "average build" and my ability to keep "constant eye contact” at my assessment last February. I have been waiting for a tribunal date since then, and have been told I have to wait an extra 2 months to be given a potential date.
I am extremely passionate about my work and this topic and would be heartbroken if I couldn't complete my degree on the grounds of being too unwell to work whilst at university. The money you donate will buy the materials I need to finish my sculpture and will also go towards my travel costs to and from my workspace.
I have put in place rewards made by myself for those of you who donate. These rewards include ornaments, candles and bronze casts. If you’re interested in seeing more pictures of my work then take a look at my Instagram. Additionally, I plan to add weekly updates on Crowdfunder to show you what I’m up to!
Thanks for looking!
