We are trying to raise funds to save the Ambulance Hall, John Street, Consett and convert it to a Heritage and Arts Centre.

by Brian Harrison in Consett, England, United Kingdom

Background

The Ambulance Hall Consett has been a well used and loved building in Consett town centre since it was opened in 1934. Originally built by public subscription and the Consett Iron Works for the betterment of the area, the hall has been run by a set of local trustees until 3 years ago, when, due to ill health and aging, the Trustees reluctantly handed it over to St John Ambulance National. The belief was that it would continue to be run as a community hub. Unfortunately, SJA National have decided that it is worth more to them by selling than as a community building. SJA do a fantastic job and we have to applaud them but we think this is an absolute travesty.

The Group

Seeing the possible uses that the hall could become, from extension to a pub; warehouse; flats; or left derelict we decided that it just was totally wrong. So a dedicated group, including myself, set about having the building listed as a Community Asset, which after some hard work from our members we did in mid May 2019.

So what are we doing...

We are now in the middle of setting up a CIO, Charitable Incorporated Organisation. This CIO will be made up of purely volunteers and dedicated to the running and organisation of the Centre. While the CIO is being formed we have created a Community group to start off the initial fundraising and to get things going. The group, Consett & District Heritage and Arts was founded May 2019 by constitution.

So now the fun begins...

We now have to raise the money to purchase the hall and save this community building for future generations. The biggest catch is there is a time period of only 6 months to do it. Which is where you all come in. If everyone in the Consett area gave us just the price of a cup of coffee we can save this fabulous building with ease

What do we want to achieve...

I have been involved in both Heritage and the Arts in the area for over 20 years, the arts since the age of 9. Other members of the team include artists, musicians, historians and business people. We are all determined to raise the finances to enable us to create a Heritage and Arts Centre suitable for this fantastic area, something people have been wanting for many years. Once purchased, we will then be able to start raising the estimated £150K for the renovation. It is a task we are all dedicated to. This will enable the hall to become a centre of the arts, helping local artists to showcase their work, groups to perform and rehearse. It would also be a place to preserve our local history with permanent historical displays and micro museum and links to the history groups in the area to further promote our heritage. As a member of the local heritage group this is something I have been wanting and saw need for for a long time. Consett history and arts communities are amazing and we want to help enhance that for the betterment of the whole community.

So let's go...

The initial purchase is the first step and we hope that you will all help rally and raise the funds needed. Please spread the word and give whatever you can to help us achieve our goals...
