We started our journey July last year, when I say we I mean my partner and myself. I had worked in the autism field and mental health sector for a number of years. It soon became very apparent that sensory services were needed greatly within the South Yorkshire area. My partner was on board almost straight away when I expressed my ideas about this. We both worked extremely hard, long shifts at our place of work and put in many hours to make this idea possible. After searching for almost a year for the RIGHT premises last year we finally found it! We were so excited and happy to find the perfect place for our adventure to begin. We didn't hang around and snapped it up and went straight to work! With the help of family and friends, it took us 2 months to renovate, to suit the needs of children and adults that would be coming through our door. It was very hard work with many stressful nights and long days we didn't think it would ever end. Finally in October 2017 the day came when we opened our doors and we have met some amazing people along the way with a wide range of disabilities.
We thrive to provide the best quality sensory experience, engaging many individuals in accessing the community. Enabling them to learn various skills, have a sense of their own sensory needs and learning social and communication skills.
We provide 3 state of the art sensory rooms with, sensory equipment and a range of handpicked unique sensory toys, that each give a different sensory experience. Our sensory rooms have been designed and shown to create Relaxation, stimulation, cause and effect, calming and interactive environments with the help of toys, aromas, sounds, lights and music.
Due to the lack of funding, and after school clubs/classes available to suit the different needs of many children and adults. We are reaching out to hopefully ensure we can fulfil the need of this service within the service we already provide and greatly achieve our goal.
We are aiming to part fund our after school clubs, school holiday clubs and classes with the money raised. The money raised will help create more available time and equipment for children and adults to access our facilities.
Our after-school clubs ranging 2 – 3 times a week. The after school clubs will be pre-planned to ensure the needs of each child/adult are met accordingly to their needs. With funding available we will be able to provide:
- 75-90 children/adults places
- 4-6 hours per week to after school clubs
- 15 weeks of after school clubs
- 60-90 hours of activities overall
Our school holiday clubs will provide group activities. The school holiday group activities will also be pre-planned to ensure the needs of each child/adult are met accordingly to their needs. With funding available we will be able to provide:
- 250-270 Children/adult places
- 10-14 hours per week group activities
- 10+ weeks of school holiday activities
- 100-140+ hours of activities overall
All together we aim to provide over 230 hours of activities throughout the course of 6-10 months.
The money raised from our crowdfunding project, will help us to keep up with running costs and provide the after school, school holiday clubs and classes.
Due to our location we have great links to, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster, Wakefield and Sheffield. This enables our services to meet the needs of many children and adults. Since opening it became very apparent from all the feedback we have had, that there was such a lack of sensory environments in South Yorkshire.
