We may all understand the damage plastic straws can do, but we can't all afford the alternatives. We may know that breastfeeding is the biological norm, but actually it can be very difficult to start with. How do we afford to change our shopping choices? Where do we go for support in a time that faces cuts in the service areas?
Cariad Babi helps low income families access the same choices, the same support, by using 100% of our profits from retailing eco-friendly products to support parents. We have done some amazing things in our community already, and have an abundance of moral support behind us: from local small businesses to Derby City Council, even to The Mayor!
We use our profits to offer our workshop space free to groups such as breastfeeding support, mental health support, parent support classes who then offer free spaces to our CIC Members, and more. Other projects we fund include free cloth nappy and sling hire to our CIC Members, and very low cost eco-products that they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. It doesn't make sense to exclude low income families from environmentally friendly shopping that could save them money in the future!
We have everything in place to make our project bigger, including an amazing new city centre location to run from. Only... it's a shell. A beautiful but very empty, shell! With disabilities, children and low incomes ourselves, we need you to help us continue the change. We don't want income to hold us back with a project about helping low incomes.
We are parents, who have faced hardships, and managed to create change. We had to fight hard for the support, and some of us got more than others depending on our postcodes. This isn't fair. We have fair trade, but what about fair access? We are passionate about the environment, about informed choice, and about supporting each other, parent to parent.
Let's change the choices we have, change the future for our children and the environment. Business to business, parent to parent. For one child to the next. Join us on what we honestly believe to be something rather special!
£10,000 is our first target that we need your help with: this gets us started right away and will be matched by 50% by Derby City Council
£20,000 would be amazing: this would see us open 'The PoD' (our new workspace) in approximately 6 months
Whilst we are asking for support for the first £10,000...£85,000 is actually our total cost for the first 12 months for us to then run a profit and be sustainable! But you know, small steps and BIG favours!
