Who are we
We are Rat Race, a market leading company specialising in adventure sports and obstacle-based events. We have partnered with UK-based plant, tools and equipment hire firm GAP Group and global charity Playground Ideas to build an exciting new playground in Malur, Karnakata Province, India.
What we want to do
In 2015 - 2016, Rat Race operated a series of obstacle events in Australia. When that series ended, we were left with a container full of incredible obstacles; but on the other side of the world and with no immediate or obvious use for this equipment. Instead of scrapping this gear and disposing of it in an un-enviromentally sound way, we thought that it would be a great idea to re-purpose it all into an amazing kids’ playground. We have teamed up with charity Playground Ideas and set our sights on India, where the charity has helped us identify a superb location for the playground in Karnakata province, near Bangalore. We are working with Playground Ideas and local charity Headstreams to bring the project to life.
What we have done so far
The site has been identified by Playground Ideas and local partner Headstreams; and we have secured the generous support and co-funding of UK-based GAP group, (an important supplier to Rat Race and the events and construction industry at large) in bringing this project to life. Currently our container of gear is on the High Seas, having set sail from Brisbane in July and bound for Mumbai, where it will be offloaded and trucked by road to its new home in Malur, right in the centre of India.
Rat Race has supplied some £25,000 of hardware, purchased the container itself from the shipping line to incorporate into the playground, arranged and provided funding for shipping and booked and paid for travel and accommodation for its UK construction team to visit India to complete the build this October. In total, the project will cost some £50,000 funded mainly by Rat Race and co-funded with a significant financial contribution from GAP.
Why we need your help
We are looking to raise a further £5000 to really put the icing on the cake of this project and to provide the opportunity for our supporters to be a part of the project themselves. The simple joy a playground creates for children is tangible and palpable. Our aim in setting out on this project is to create that feeling and to generate a real sense of ‘wow’ on the faces of the kids as we unveil this fantastic new facility to them. We aim to create a space that is both joyful and practical. And in order for it really deliver in spades on the wow factor, there are a few special additions we wish to add. The bulk of the equipment provided will be steel tubes, fixtures and fittings, machined metal components, tyres and wooden assets. Plus essential stuff like concrete, tools and consumables that’s all bought and paid for. What will really send this playground into orbit are the finishing touches, which is where you come in. We would like to purchase a zip wire, some special climbing holds (to build a fun and safe climbing feature on the container), a safety net for a bailey bridge, some aluminium poles for a fireman’s pole descent and other unique items that will really cover off the best playground we can build. Your funding will go into these assets, to ensure that the finished product really is World-class. You are in effect allowing us to deliver the wow factor.
