Operation Heartbeat came about because of a discussion the local Girls Brigade had at one of their meetings they realised the importance of AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators) within the community. Following on from this conversation we heard about the conversation that had been had and decided to act upon it. As a board we did some research and found 3 spots within the Community that would give the best coverage and the most chance of saving lives. This is a great opportunity for young people in our community to see that we are listening to their thoughts and acting on them.
The money will be used to purchase and install 3 AEDs and accompanying CCTV systems to protect the equipment. Our area is one of the most impoverished areas within the Wakefield Distric Council area, as a result diet, exercise and personal well-being are a low priority. This means that the risk of heart disease is much higher than in many other areas making the need for publicly accessible AEDs a top priority in the area. The fitting of these AEDs means there is a very real and undeniable possibility these might save lives.
