On a daily basis, we bare witness to the worsening homelessness crisis. At present, there are 1800 without a home in Manchester City Centre. While charities are doing their best to help the crisis, it has become evident that although there is work targeting the problem, the symptoms are not being treated. As such, we have developed a plan to challenge some of the most fundamental issues with homelessness. For those in a state of homelessness, hygiene and basic care items become of peripheral importance and access to such items are both limited and expensive.
On this premise, we have come up with the idea to develop care packages to distribute out to the homeless on a weekly/fortnightly basis. In addition, we intend for there to be areas or locations around Manchester, that they can be collected from. Having spoken to the potential recipients of these kits, we have established a list of things that would be of most benefit. The items will be held in a draw-string bag for re-use and items will be sourced in bulk. Each kit is expected to cost between £2-3 to put together and we intend to trial with 100 or so in the first round.
For men, the packages will include:
- roll-on deodorant
- body wash
- baby wipes
- protein bar
- glucose tablets
- refillable water-pouch
- toilet roll
- voucher for barber shop/hair salon
- guide to hostels and places to acquire help around the city
For women, the packages will include all of the above plus:
- sanitary towels
- feminine wipes
This idea has the potential to be drawn out across the UK and we are truly passionate about making that happen.
