Who we are - our artistic mission for the community

Prima Choral Artists have been enriching York's cultural life for over 8 years taking hundreds of regular singers from every walk of life on a remarkable artistic journey; creating opportuntities for local musicians and motivating others by example.

More than a regular community choir, Prima Vocal Ensemble has a clear mission - everybody has the opportunity to step out of familiar comfort zones and engage with the arts in a way never before imagined. Everybody can experience the joy of performing high class contemporary music by living composers from Eric Whitacre to grammy winning Christopher Tin , stretching musical horizons to new heights through performance in truly inspiring national & international locations.

The  most diverse choir of its kind in the area, they have graced the stage of the very best venues at home and abroad including London's Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall;  Carnegie Hall in New York City and Harrogate's Royal Hall. They have sung from the summit of the Italian Tyrol to 100m underground in Poland’s Wieliczka Salt Mine(!) Prima have supported internationally renowned tenor Russell Watson, West End star and X-factor winner Sam Bailey, performed with Flamenco/ Jazz guitarist & composer, Eduardo Niebla and double Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin.

What we need the funding for

With our upcoming North Yorkshire premiere of the Grammy awarded LUX AETERNA by Morten Lauridsen, we would like to take the thrill of live performance to a stirring new level with the formation of The Prima Concert Orchestra. The orchestra will consist of hand-picked professional, local musicians and will be available to accompany our thriving community choir in future concerts. To sing in a large chorus with an orchestra is a truly life-affirming  experience, and through the opportunities already created by Prima Choral Artists, this feeling is no longer just for an elite few, but something the entire community can share the excitement of - performers and their audiences alike.

  Why we need your help

£3200 will help us cover the cost of rehearsal time and performance with the required 28 piece orchestra and help us kick start future sponsorship. We have in the past benefitted from funding from The Arts Council, City of York Council and smaller scale sponsorship from a range of amazing local businesses. Through these sources and ticket sales we have been able to continue to develop.

Due to a shortfall in funding our plans are not currently matched by the budget we have available, and so this is where you come in!

If you love quality live concerts...

If you love supporting local talent...

you can help make a real difference to the cultural life of the community!

The debut concert for the orchestra is on Saturday 20th May 2017 when Prima Vocal Ensemble  perform the beautiful 1997 suite "Lux Aeterna", Bob Chilcott's ever-popular "Little Jazz Mass" and touching tributes to sadly missed, inspirational artists.

As a thank you for your support we have some rewards available, please see individual pledges for more details. Rewards will be made available shortly before the event.
