I am a local artist inspired by the built environment and community in which I live here in Portobello, working in pen and watercolour and painting outside.
I've been making watercolour paintings of the shops, public buildings and homes of Portobello for the last few years. Now I want to make a book bringing this work together and to share it more widely.
But I can only make this happen with your help.
How it all started
I started painting house portraits and buildings in Kirkcudbright, SW Scotland, a town I have known all my life which is very close to my heart. These paintings of old Georgian homes, high street shops, B&Bs and hotels were exhibited in two exhibitions at the High St Gallery, Kirkcudbright in 2012 and 2014.
The second show was accompanied by a small book, 'Kirkcudbright, a book of paintings', funded by Creative Scotland. The book was well received and as the Kirkcudbright series of paintings reached a natural conclusion I began to paint closer to home in the seaside town of Portobello on the edge of Edinburgh where I live.
A Portobello book of paintings
The idea to produce another book with the same modest but high quality format seemed to be the natural next step. Painting Portobello has been a joy, it is so rich in characterful, lived-in buildings and there is so much more to do. But the timing of this book feels right. I plan to launch it at Art Walk Porty 2018, a local open studio event now in its 4th year and already popular with art lovers in Portobello, Edinburgh and beyond.
Pledges and Book and Print rewards
Launching a crowdfunder to fund the costs of printing 1000 copies of the book seems to make sense, and the messages of support I've received already seem to confirm it is the right choice. I'm enormously grateful for your help to make this project a reality.
You can pledge £5 for a discounted copy of the book; there is a book bundle including both the Portobello and Kirkcudbright books for £9; five copies of the new book for £22; a book with a signed limited edition Porty print for £55; and with 2 prints for £100. The prints are mounted and wrapped and make a wonderful keepsake or unique gift for anyone who loves Porty.
