East-the-water has never had the investment into its play facilities that it deserves and we are trying to change that. Working with Friends of Bideford Play Spaces and Pollyfield Youth Club we are bringing two projects forward that will really create a positive and vibrant play experience in East-the-Water.
The Pollyfield Pirate Ship is a marine themed play area for the Pollyfield Play Park and different ideas will be on display on the 14th December at the Pollyfield Centre for people to see. The maritime theme reflects the maritime history of the area which supplied ships to the English fleet that defeated the Spanish Armarda during the reign of Elizabeth I. The imaginative play and learning we are gaining out of this equipment will help not only entertain children from East-the-Water but the surrounding north Devon area too. We are concerned to involve children at all levels of the design and implementation of this project and hope to work with primary schools across the area to steer the projects final design.
In addition, we are looking at a cycle circuit, or pump track, at Alverdiscott Park to help local children engage in cycling, scooters and skate boards away from the roads that the children now use. Alongside the Pollyfield Youth Club we are engaging young people to keep them safe from traffic and to stop antisocial behaviour caused by lack of facilities. The Pump Track designer Kye Forte is working with us to create a design that will provide long lasting entertainment for the younger cyclist and beginner alike. We need to ensure that our children are active and engaging together socially outside to avoid a worsening of the childhood obesity crisis.
East-the-Water is an area of high relative deprivation meaning that children have fewer opportunities provided by the private sector. The District Council has also restricted its investment in play spaces in the area and this impacts on all aspects of childrens lives. We hope to get the cycle circuit in place as soon as possible to avoid any traffic collisions caused by children and teens playing out on busy streets. Please help us reach our goal and our stretch target so we can demonstrate the community desire for better play spaces in East-the-Water.
