In 2018 we did a crowdfunding to help a local community in Pogolotti, Havana that had helped us in our first few years developing Domingo & Luanda Pau’s dance festival. We raised almost all of our target and the floor is complete. Being there in April 2019 we were able to communicate with the community about everything and we are elated to find out how important a move this was for so many of the local people. We didn’t imagine that it would be such an important thing to do and now we really want to continue building something up in this part of Havana.
One reason that we have had such an impact with such a little achievement is the lack of any form of support this area has had in recent years. The area is run down and forgotten. Felix Molina, the owner of the land we put the floor on, Babalao and ex-student of the school that backs up onto the project told about how it was managed. “it wasn’t easy but everyone got involved and helped do the carrying, digging and the hard labour” “it’s serving a good purpose with the children and adults in this community”.
We now have realised that with a little we can help a lot. Through successful crowdfunding, we created a nice place for the local community to enjoy various social activities.
Now we are raising funds to run regular, weekly dance instruction in traditional Cuban dances to young people. With two main objectives
1. Provide a safe environment to learn and encourage young people to acquire skill in Cuban dance and music - especially Rumba, Makuta, Son, Palo & Yoruba that are in danger of becoming obsolete and forgotten.
2. Aim to create a performance by the young people at our annual event.
