Play Wild! is a small business providing outdoor play and education services in Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding areas. We facilitate outdoor play and Forest School sessions for families and children as well as community groups, early years settings and schools. We also runbirthday parties and currently use local parks and spaces and hire local community buildings to deliver our services. We have been given the opportunity to lease a disused quarry in Weston-super-Mare from the local authority. It was previously used by local community groups but in recent years it has not been viable for the local authority to maintain it due to the cost of the work required. We would like to get the site back up and running to offer a safe outdoor space for schools and community groups to visit that is free of dog fouling and litter. This will be offered alongside our exsiting business offer. As well as sessions for children, families, schools and early years settings we intend to run adult sessions to increase confidence in being outdoors and to promote health and well-being. The quarry used to have a small ampetheatre and we would also love to bring this back to life with storytelling, drama workshops and recitals.
Our vision, after the quarry rock face and trees are made safe, is to establish a versitile outdoor space that can be used for children's play and exploration, community and youth group hire, story telling, education, well-being and other outdoor events.
Our careers have weaved through a variety of work with children, young people and communities. Between us we have worked in early years education, supported communities and vulnerable families, developed and provided outdoor/adventure education and run holiday clubs and play services as well as working in primary, secondary and alternative educational provision and residential children's homes. Between us we have qualifications in Early Years, Child and Adolescent Studies, Countryside Management, Leadership and Management, Primary Teacher training and Forest School as well as Safeguarding and First Aid in the Outdoors. That's quite a lot of experience to draw on!
We need to raise £16,000 to commission essential work to the tree line around the quarry, fund a rock face survey and any subsequest work, install a compostable toilet with solar lighting and build shelters. Our rewards have been designed so that, should we not raise the desired amount, or if the site takes longer to get up and running than we hope, rewards can still be fulfilled delivered from alternative sites. If this is the case then all funds raised will still go towards the set up of the quarry and alternative funding will be sought elsewhere to make up the shortfall.
