I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the response, support and encouragement I have received online, at trade fairs following the launch of my new small business. This has only confirmed to how much the public appreciate my small business’s input within the community.
THE WOMAN BEHIND IT ALL
My name is Yanique and I am a self-taught digital artist/ illustrator and the owner of Pink Prints Limited, an online card, gift and accessory store.
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all” – Helen Keller. The excitement of running my own business in an area which allows me to express my passion of illustration and arts while tackling major societal issue of underrepresentation.
Last year I was studying law in Coventry. I was 21, suffering from depression and studying a subject which pleased my parents. I had no idea where life was leading me, I just knew that, supressing the creative in me and working in office was my idea of hell. One morning I decided that I could no longer keep my hobby as a hobby and it was then that I made the difficult decision to drop out and start Pink Prints. My business has allowed me to pour my heart into something that means so much to me. I am able to include underrepresented women within an industry that has paid them no mind, and bring joy to hearts other than my own,
WE DESERVE TO BE REPRESENTED
Whether it’s a birthday, a deed of gratitude or just an action of thoughtfulness, sending greeting cards and gifts are an important aspect in showing affection for loved ones, or even for oneself. Lack of diversity and representation within the greeting card and gift industry is a prominent issue within todays multi-cultural and integrated society. Walking into high-street card and gift stores and only seeing cards with illustrations of a beautiful blonde lady or a sweet blue-eyed girl, can often lead to frustration and feelings of exclusion. That is why I created Pink Prints.
Pink Prints offers a wide range of illustrated designs, set out to include women and girls of all ethnicities, cultures, backgrounds and abilities. My company promises to demonstrate all passion towards the inclusion of all. We celebrate the uniqueness of women, making sure that there is something for everyone.
Currently, as I do not have my own equipment and machinery, Pink Prints’ cards, gifts and accessories mostly run on a Print on Demand bases. This means that profit is very low as the external companies who print and ship my products take majority of costs, making it impossible for my business to grow. Business/ consumer relationships are extremely important to me and so funding will let me be able to have control over the quality of my products and the speed of meeting my orders allows me to ensure that my customers are happy.
Machinery is not cheap and so reaching my goal will allow me to purchase all the machinery I need so that I can expand by business' work rate. Pink Prints will be able to expand its products and ensure great quality. Funding will help with purchasing stock, turning my ideas into products, and build my team of Pink Printers!
Pink Prints is currenly home run, and I am steadily running out of space. Reaching my £20,000 goal will help me move into a bigger, more appropriate studio so I can continue to develop and grow my company.
A LITTLE RESEARCH
Many sceptics would think in these economic times, a small business wouldn’t be capable of successfully launching their business. However, the following research findings will prove that small businesses in the gift and accessories industry have a distinct advantage. According to the Giftware Association, the sector is worth an estimate of £10bn a year, proving that the market is huge and there is potential for success.
I plan to someday take over the UK’s leading luxury card and gift store, however in the meantime, I am need of all the help I can get to give my business the support it needs.
Thank you for your support and for taking the time to read through my story. I hope you can help towards my dream and see my vision as greatly as I do!
P.s. Some pledges include your very own personal, hand-illustrated portrait/ gifts like the ones pictured below!!
