No it's not a typo ha ha cushions are common in the sewing world and make people instantly think of sewing. I love ancient Egypt and how better to incorporate the ancient region of Kush (modern day Sudan) into the name Pin Kushion! I have loved cross-stitch since I was a teenager. It is the art of turning a pixelated type image and sewing it onto a canvas in lots of mini crosses.

There are many beautiful designs such as fairies & angels but they are not always representative so I would like to create kits for beginners, intermediate and advanced cross-stitchers with afrocentric designs that appeal to all. This is a kit that I bought & modified the skin colour slightly so that it looked more like me.

In October 2017, I lost my job & decided to turn my hobby into a business. I am currently producing bespoke  crafts such as cushion covers, cushions & rugs. My aim is to produce cross stitch kits & donate a percentage of sales to charities in the UK, Caribbean & Africa. These regions are part of my heritage. I saw their beauty as well as some of the drawbacks of the society, and I would love to create a way to help the areas that inspire me.

My eventual dream is to take the designs to these areas, where the majority of my inspiration comes from. Then train women with basic sewing skills to cross-stitch my designs, so that they can be used on the graphics of the kits. In order to create financial sustainability, I will employ the women to also make the soft furnishings and handmade elements of the business.

The £5,000 would go towards items that I need for the kits such as:

  • canvas
  • thread
  • sewing needles
  • packaging
  • graphic designers costs
  • website (I also need to market Pin Kushion to reach a broader audience outside my local community)
  • printing costs
  • sewing machines
  • training
