To raise money to take my daughter, Peyton Rose, to India for an urgent heart operation.

by Simon Henderson in

Dear friends and family,

This is one of the hardest things, as parents, Chantal and I, have ever had to do.

You may know that our daughter Peyton Rose was born with severe congenital heart defects. Although her condition has been managed to date, she now needs open heart surgery. The reason we are fund raising is that this surgery can only take place in India, as its the most cost effective, and due to Zimbabwe’s forex issues, we are unable to convert our funds into $USD or transfer funds abroad.

In short we need forex to pay for the medical package to India upfront, our bank can’t provide forex and to attempt to buy it on the black market could result in imprisonment of 10 years.

We are therefore sending out this appeal for help as time is not on our side – the longer we take trying to find a way to come up with the necessary forex, the more likely Peyton is of developing tissue damage to the pulmonary artery or stunted development and oxygen deprivation issues. She is currently on medication three times daily to help with her heart failure.

Peyton needs your help and we ask that you kindly consider helping her. We don’t wish to burden anyone but we must find a resolution come what may. And we will. God Bless and thank for taking your time out to read this.

Further background:

Our lives were blessed when our daughter, Peyton Rose, was born on the 24th October 2017 and bringing her home was just an amazing scary experience, as all new parents can attest!

As some of you may or may not recall, when Peyton was 3 weeks old, however, she was diagnosed as having severe congenital heart defects – it was found that she has a large hole (ventricular septal defect – VSD) in her heart, a hypoplastic aortic arch and a tight coarctation of the aorta (i.e. underdeveloped arteries that severely restricted the flow of blood to her body and vital organs). Her lungs were being flooded with blood while her vital organs were being starved of oxygen.

Peyton was essentially in heart failure, was oxygen dependant and urgently needed surgery so she was rushed to South Africa for emergency treatment.

The surgeons in S.A repaired the coarctation of the aorta, her hypoplastic aortic arch (using part of her pericardium – the sac that surrounds the heart) and they also inserted a band around her pulmonary artery (PA band) which would help reduce the excessive pressure and volume of blood flowing to her lungs.

As a baby, Peyton would not have coped with repairing all the defects in one go, the surgery to close the large VSD and to subsequently remove the PA band is to be done once she is strong enough for surgeons to carry out open heart surgery… that time has now come! Now unfortunately this procedure cannot be performed in Zimbabwe and we have to go abroad and India seems the most cost effective route.

Houston we have a problem!

Zimbabwe has completely run out of foreign currency and Government is no longer providing forex for medical procedures performed abroad, even ones that cannot be performed locally.

This has resulted in;

· Our medical aid provider (Cimas) advising us that they will no longer be paying for her surgery as their Guarantee of Payment (G.O.P.) facility has been indefinitely suspended.

· Our Bank cannot provide the forex and have advised they cannot make any guarantees on payments being processed to the hospital in advance to secure her bed. An avenue we are still pursuing but seems unlikely even by their own admission.

· Our bank accounts are no longer considered to be USD$ value and we therefore cannot use our bank cards abroad, nor can we transfer funds abroad.

· We were advised to open a new USD (Nostro) Account and deposit USD cash into it and we can use that abroad (without saying where to source the said forex).

· The government of Zimbabwe has implemented a new law, in order to try and stem hyperinflation, that targets individuals who deal with forex on the black market. This new law states that those caught buying (and selling) forex risk being imprisoned for ten years!

Whilst we are pursuing some and have exhausted several other possible options we will keep this page updated on progress and fund raising developments.

In the event we have any donations left after clearing Peyton's medical bills we would like to Pay It Forward to a worthy cause like the Heart Foundation or another heart patient.

(An account will be kept for any of the money received and used, should anyone who has contributed wish to see them :)

Thank you for reading and please feel free to get in contact if you have any questions.
