To help sustainability for a local youth club by giving them reserve funds so they can stay open even when low numbers can't cover hall cost

by Jeremy Hurley in Tonmawr, Wales, United Kingdom

Pelenna Youth Club is a childrens club open every friday with the majority being under 12. It is based at Tonmawr Community Centre and prior to this was held in Tonmawr school. It has been established for over 40 years. It has given great service to the children from the locality and has been run by many different volunteers, mainly being parents. Currently it is being run by brother and sister, Richard Oakley & Vicky Oakley, their mother, Carol Oakley and Lisa Higgins, Vicky's daughter, they have been long term volunteers with the club.

Pelenna Youth club are currently in a dire situation, they have no reserve of funds meaning that if not enough children turn up, below 10, they can't open the doors as the money raised doesn't cover the hall hire costs. This leads to the sad situation of attending children, running around the village knocking doors trying to self recruit on the night to make the numbers up. Great initiative but sad to see. This in turn causes the viscious circle of uncertainty and lack of continuity which means that numbers drop off compounding the problem. We want to raise money so that they can open even if numbers are low, thus the children will know that there is always youth club.

We also plan to then actively recruit extra numbers by variation of activities, social media etc. so that eventually, the club will be self sustainable.

Again, if they increase numbers of older children, the local youth service will re engage their support.
