I have been interested in fair isle knitting ever since I bought "The complete book of traditional fair isle knitting" by Sheila McGregor. I have knitted many things using this book, including a jumper for my husband. We both wish you good luck with the project and hope to go and visit you one day.
my maiden name was manson I believe we originate from the islands
So important to pass down the skills and carry on the craft. I'm lucky to have learned so much from so many skilled Shetland crafters. Thank you!
I can trace my Shetland ancestry to Erasmus Smith on Unst in the 18th century. I will make my first-ever visit in Summer next year. A magnificent project but where are the boys in this?
What a wonderful project. I know that knitting has been taken out of the schools, and I applaud the determination and creativity of the adults who are putting this together to keep the spirit and the skills and the heritage going. Bravo!
Good luck with this totally worthwhile and hugely important project folks. Great to see this happening in the 'private sector'. That's how it will sustain and develop best.
My mother is originally from Shetland and she is a fabulous fair isle & lace knitter but sadly I did not see the importance of learning when I was young. Hopefully my pledge will see a young person learn to carry on the great knitting traditions of Shetland.
I am honored to contribute to this worthwhile project! I have been twice to Shetland in the past two years, this year coming to Shetland Wool Week 2015! Very magical place - it has a part of my heart. I wish all the success to this endeavor and happy knitting to these peeriemakkers of the future!
Such a great cause- had the best holiday ever during wool week, so I hope you raise what you need!!
Fantastic project. The volunteers are so dedicated and the enthusiasm of the children is amazing. Here's to the future of Shetland's heritage! Well done!
As a lifelong knitter, taught by my mum, who was taught by her mum, and so it goes on, I can think of nothing more important than passing on this skill. It has commercial value but also brings joy and peace of mind. I wish everyone the very best of luck, I'm pleased to be a tiny part of this essential project.
I'm french (my grand mother says that I have an scot ancestor, I hope so...) but I think it's so important so share customs and history... I'm knitter too, but I don't know how to create this marvelous things, perhaps one day I will come to learn... Good Luck
This project is brilliant!!! I'm 100% sure this will go from strength to strength with the sheer amount of support you will receive, our children and grandchildren will thank you all for this in the future.
I'm so pleased to help. I admire the Shetland knitting techniques and hope to create something using them in the future. Traditions need the support of many, young, old and those in the middle as well :) Thank you for creating this project.
Shetland has such a rich tradition of Fair Isle knitting that it would be tragic if it was lost. I was happy to be able to promote and support Shetland knitters and other Shetland arts and crafts makers when I ran my craft shop, Oily Muggie, and its online shop. Glad to support the cause.
Such a worthy cause! Knitting has brought such joy into my life -- so happy I can help support it bringing joy into the lives of others!
