UK households waste around 20% of the food they buy.
20 - 40% of UK fruit and vegetables are rejected even before they reach the shop - mostly because they do not match the supermarkets cosmetic standards.
5.8 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE UK ARE SUFFERING FROM FOOD POVERTY WHILST AN ESTIMATED 15 MILLION TONNES OF FOOD GOES TO LANDFILL EACH YEAR.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT - IF WE ALL STOP WASTING FOOD THAT COULD HAVE BEEN EATEN THE BENEFIT TO THE PLANET WOULD BE THE EQUIVALENT OF TAKING 1 IN 4 CARS OFF THE ROAD.
The water used globally to grow food that is wasted is enough for the domestic needs of 9 billion people. The number expected on the planet by 2050.
10% of rich countries' greenhouse gas emissions come from growing, transporting, storing and preparing food THAT IS NEVER EATEN!
(Facts from the real Junk food project)
It's total and utter madness that there are still people in the world today struggling to feed themselves or their families when there is so much food wasted on a daily basis. The lunacy of this is that THERE IS NOTHING WRONG with this food but because they have expired sell by or use by dates they are deemed to be unfit for human consumption which is simply not true in most cases.
Why should people go hungry if something can be done to prevent it?
I want to open up a pay as you feel cafe in Newbury. There are several of these cafes popping up all over the UK but none in my hometown of Newbury. The idea behind this concept is that food is intercepted before it goes into landfill. This food is then cooked and fed to people and then they give what they believe the meal is worth. This doesn't always mean money, they can give their time, expertise, labour or something else . Or they can simply walk away And give nothing. The cafe is open to everyone whatever their circumstances and bank balance.
By opening up one of these cafes we will be highlighting the issue of food wastage, doing our bit to eliminate this ridiculous practice but more importantly helping those that really do need help who might otherwise go hungry.
The money I am asking for will go to pay the rent for a full year of an old Strada cafe that closed down. It will also go to paying a salary for one full time employee for a year, plus essentials to run a cafe, plates, cutlery etc.
I want the cafe to be a place where people come to meet and make friends, to take an hour or two in the warm before going out to sleep on the streets again, where parents can bring their children to eat because they can't afford to feed them in school holidays, where the elderly who may never speak to another person for weeks at a time can come and feel part of society again.
In time I want to add a shower room so that any homeless people can come in to get washed as there are no facilities for them currently in Newbury to do this.
I also would like to be able to use the cafe as an address for those without one so that they can access basic services which they otherwise would struggle to do without one.
And finally an area where people can access the internet.
I know this is a massive task ahead and currently it is just me but if we can get this project off the ground I believe it will change so many lives.
Thanks for your time.
