Who we are and what we want to do
Streetwise Opera is an award-winning charity that runs music programmes and puts on operas with people who have experienced homelessness. The Sixteen is a world-renowned choir and period instrument ensemble. In association with HOME, we are collaborating to produce The Passion, an opera world premiere for Easter weekend 2016.
The Passion is a fully-staged, abridged version of Bach’s iconic oratorio St Matthew Passion, culminating in a brand new ‘resurrection’ finale written by acclaimed composer Sir James MacMillan with libretto by Streetwise Opera performers. Directed by the award-winning Penny Woolcock, this site-specific production will be performed on 25 and 26 March 2016 in the impressive Victorian iron and glass surroundings of Manchester’s Campfield Market.
The cast will be made up of performers who have experienced homelessness from Streetwise Opera Manchester, alongside professional singers and instrumentalists from The Sixteen. It promises to be an extraordinary event.
What we need
We've raised most of the money we need to make this amazing show happen, but we need your help for the final push. To pay for costumes, props and production costs, we need to raise £7,500. Every penny and pound we raise towards this target will make a difference to the experience our performers and audience have.
If we raise above our target, the extra funds will contribute to costs for the final two-week intensive rehearsal period.
This production will help to promote more positive public attitudes towards homeless people and show our performers that whatever life throws at them, they can achieve great things. We’ve found in our previous productions that a professional show experience like this can be transformational, giving people the confidence and skills they need to make positive and lasting changes in their lives.
What you get
In return for your support, you won’t just get a warm glow – you’ll get some fabulous perks! Social media shout-outs, CDs and DVDs from both companies, tickets to the show, invitations to rehearsals – you can really get involved with The Passion. Alternatively, if you just want to support the project without getting tickets or goodies, that would be awesome too - and we'll be able to claim Gift Aid on your donation. Just select the 'Donation with Gift Aid' option on pledges of £25 and above.
Contributing to this campaign will give you the chance to get involved in (and possibly see behind the scenes of) a unique site-specific production featuring some incredible artists. You’ll also be helping to give our talented performers who have experienced homelessness an amazing opportunity – to star in a professional production with one of the best choirs in the world.
