Project aim

Joe is the current National Para duathlon Champion. His ultimate goal is to compete in the Paralympic games 2016 in Rio

About the project

Joe Allen. 27 years old. I was born without my right hand. Lived in Bridport all my life. Went to Oxford Brookes University. Now living in West Bay and running my own run coaching company called "Transition Running", also work at the Bridport Leisure Centre as an instructor. My goal is to compete in the Rio 2016 Paralympics in the triathlon.    Running is my strength having competed from a young age. I was county champion for cross country and 3000m on track growing up.    I failed to qualify for the London 2012 Paralympics for the 1500m. I was 4 seconds short of the qualification time.  Changed to Triathlon at the end of 2012. I have competed for Great Britain in triathlon over the 2013 season but decided to take 2014 season out of competition to concentrate on my swimming, which is my weakest discipline.    I was crowned National Duathlon Champion 2015 on Sunday 29th March. The event was held at Rockingham race circuit near Corby. It comprised of a strong field of 30 elite athletes. It was a 5km run- 20km bike- 2.5km run. It's the first race on the calendar after a long winter of training so I was very happy with the form I was in. The conditions on the day were foul! The rain was continuous making the bike course very technical and slow. The wind was constant around 27mph. I took a good lead on the run, I was caught by two athletes on the bike after struggling with the wind and the handling of my road bike which caused me to fall off my bike entering the transition area. I then managed to take the lead back on the final run. Winning comfortably with a margin of 30 seconds.

My next event is the British Triathlon Championships in Llanelli on May the 16th. Until then I will be working hard with my two swim coaches Ian Mortimer and Tracy Clarke, both of whom coached at Bridport Barracudas.  They have both volunteered their time to completely reform my swimming and I owe them a great deal of thanks.  Also to thank the Bridport Leisure Centre for allowing me to use a private lane twice a week and the centres great facilities.    The British Championships will be the qualification race for this years World Championships in Chicago and for the Rio test event- held in Rio de Janeiro. This will give all triathletes the chance to race in Rio a year before the Paralympics.    I am currently still racing on a road bike which puts me at a significant disadvantage in such a competitive field.  A time trial bike would allow me to compete with the best in the world but they can cost from £4000-5000, so I have set up a funding page to help with purchasing the bike and realise my Paralympic dream. Any donations are more than welcome and greatly appreciated.
