Georgian theatre company Our Theatre uses puppetry, mime and dance to encourage conversations about ageing, memory and perspectives towards death.
Paradiso is the magical place where old people turn back into babies. Here, death is not the end – it’s the beginning of the circle of life. Paradiso is a wordless physical piece presented by renowned Georgian puppetry company Our Theatre with great passion. It's a stunning production with a creative use of puppetry and music, and a fantastic cast who will move the audience to laughter and tears. It tells a story of both happiness and sorrow across the whole lives of three old men, as they enter their final days.
About "Our Theatre"
Our Theatre was born on the 3rd of February in 2011 in Tbilisi, Georgia. The company works with different styles of puppetry – marionettes, hand puppets, stick puppets and contemporary styles - to create performances and shows for both children and adults. Every puppet and decoration for the performances are made in the workshop of Our Theatre. The company began with art performances in the streets of Tbilisi and Istanbul and later branched out to other kinds of festivals. Also, their creative group has worked on scenography for different Georgian Theatres: “Borjomi State Puppet Theatre”, “Iron Theatre”, “Griboedov Theatre” and so on. Our creative group manages art shows and performances for different state and private organizations.
Where We Start...
In 2012, a Georgian version of “As You Like It” was presented at the Globe to Globe Festival in London, which brought a very unusual theatre experience to British local audiences and raised our great interest in exploring more about the Georgian theatre culture.
We then went to Georgian Showcase in 2017 and Our Theatre’s PARADISO was a big surprise of the showcase. Being presented in an abandoned aircraft cabin adapted theatre space, PARADISO took a heavy topic lightly and brought laughter and tears into space.
We decided to introduce this unique production to international audiences and bring the team to a bigger stage. After overcoming several difficulties, we are glad to announce that PARADISO is ready for the Edinburgh Fringe festival this year!
Still, due to the timeframe of Fringe application did not match the funding circle in Georgia. We couldn’t receive the government funding this year to support the company. By setting up this crowdfunding campaign, we would like to invite all our friends to support this amazing piece!
Join Us To Share This Important Story...
A large proportion of the European population is made up of elderly people, and yet we still find it difficult to talk about ageing and death. Our Theatre's PARADISO addresses this important topic of today's society and reveals the deep insights of how we embrace the late stages of our life.
Diversity is an essential part of the Edinburgh Fringe and the renowned Our Theatre is one of the few Georgian theatre companies that has made their way to the UK. With its impressive puppetry techniques, aesthetics and strong storytelling skills, PARADISO is a unique piece which you shouldn't miss.
All the donations we receive will be used to cover the cost of PARADISO's production, including return flight tickets and accommodation for the artists, venue hire and other administrative costs. Your support is vital for us to build this magical and joyful experience for everyone.
