Eight years ago we leased part of Paignton Green from the Council and built the Geoplay Park with funding primarily from the National Lottery Communities Fund. We are all volunteers - we had never done anything like this before but we wanted Paignton to have a great park for all ages - residents and visitors alike, and one that could tell the story of Paignton and its great geology.
We have maintained this park since with volunteers and rental income from a café we lease to a local business. The park has been hugely successful - more successful that we had ever imagined. According to TripAdvisor it is one of the top 5 attractions in Paignton. There is rarely a time when someone isn't swinging, climbing or digging in the park.
But it has been a victim of its own success - in its first year it had the footfall expected in the first 5 years of the park. Our volunteers have used our income carefully to keep the park operational and looking great. But now some of the 'bigger ticket' items need to be replaced.
We are seeking to raise money to replace the soft surfacing on the park. It is impossible to raise this money through grant funding - so we are asking anyone who has used the park to give us a small contribution so that we can keep it open and safe.
Let Paignton carry on playing.....
