Ykids Ltd / Kingsley & Co

RCN 1141530, Bootle

Ykids works to bring hope to at risk and vulnerable young people and families in Bootle, which ranks amongst the 1 and 2% most deprived in the UK. Our vision is to raise World Changers – young people who believe and are equipped to make a difference in their own lives and in the world around them, in an environment where they feel safe, loved and lead happy, productive and ambitious lives. Kinsgley & Co is our magical children's bookshop and literacy project - improving the outcomes of local children and young people through a love of all things 'story'.

Due to the redevelopment of the Strand Shopping Centre, Kingsley & Co are now having to relocate to an alternative location - and we need YOUR help to make it happen! Please support us so we can continue to improve outcomes for deprived children.

Kingsley & Co is a magical children's bookshop and literacy project of Ykids Children's charity in Liverpool. Named after Victorian Explorer, Mary Kingsley, Kingsley & Co aims to inspire and equip young explorers using the power of 'story'.

Literacy rates across the area are within the bottom 6% in the UK. However, reading for enjoyment has been shown to be more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status (OECD, 2002). This brought about the birth of Kingsley & Co., seeking to engage children and their families in a love of all things story, promoting literacy through creativity, storytelling, reading and writing, and thus improve wellbeing, literacy and life long outcomes for children in Bootle.

We have been working in the community of Bootle for over 20 years running both large scale community events and weekly kids clubs for children ages 4-18. We aims to invest in children and young people, who then gain confidence and self belief to make be the change they want to see in their community.

In 2019 we launched a new project, Kingsley & Co a Victorian Explorer Steampunk themed  children’s literacy and arts project.

Here's what our visitors have said about their time with us:

"My children absolutely loved it! One of my children has ADHD and ASD and the staff were great with him. Staff were friendly, helpful and genuinely cared about the children. Amazing!"

"Community spirit is so low around here. This is just what is needed. You are doing a great job."

Here's what your donations could do for local children:

  • £15 could pay for a whole family to take part in a story workshop.
  • £30 could pay for a whole class to take home a book of their choosing from a visit to Kingsley & Co.
  • £50 could pay for our Literacy Project Manager to train up to 30 parents/carers in how to effectively read with their children.
  • £100 could pay for a class group to experience the magic of Kingsley & Co and take part in their own workshop.
  • £200 could pay for an author to visit a local school (proven to lead to increased reading in a child's free time).
