 New stretch target

If we meet our initial £1800 target (covering a year of 3 courses), the stretch target of £3600 will provide the funds for another year.

Our vision is to hopefully help transform our community by helping people to be more in control of their wellbeing, by providing the tools for people to become more financially independent.

We do this by operating a Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Life Skills group out of St John’s church in Yeovil. Along with a manager, there are 4 other volunteer life skill coaches, and a number of volunteer helpers facilitating 3 x 8-week courses per year, with 10 clients on each course. The group is open to all regardless of any religious belief; something we pride ourselves on.

We will provide skills to improve important parts of people’s lives, lift the pressure of low-income life, and meet new friends in a welcoming environment. The aim is for people living below the poverty line to learn skills and use the tools taught, helping them stay out of debt. When people are caught early enough and learn how to budget, the hope is they don’t fall into debt.

Funds will be used to pay CAP head office for course materials; local salaried admin support; expenses required for coaching sessions outside the course; refreshments for each course; a celebration meal at the end of each course. Everything is free for all clients.

Budgeting is not generally taught in schools so we all learn a life of using credit with some falling into unmanageable debt. The CAP Life Skills course provides the tools to learn how to budget, and for those on a very low income, learn financial resilience, with the aim to not have to rely on credit.
