Wounds: A Short Film explores intergenerational trauma through an Asian mother-daughter lens.

Wounds is a student short film that delves into the complexities of intergenerational trauma through the intimate lens of an Asian mother-daughter relationship. Inspired by my own lived experiences, the project has deeply resonated with our team, many of whom have grappled with similar struggles.

In recent years, a growing discourse around intergenerational trauma has prompted young people like myself to revisit our family dynamics and childhoods through the framework of psychology. These emotional scars are particularly prevalent in East Asian cultures, yet they have long been silenced under the weight of tradition—becoming unspoken, lingering shadows in the memories of many.

What makes this trauma even more painful is the dissonance we face when trying to engage our elders in open dialogue. More often than not, our efforts are met with confusion—or worse, a perpetuation of the very patterns we’re trying to heal.

Having witnessed countless stories echoing this cycle, I felt compelled to give voice to this experience—to express it, document it, and create space for reflection. This film is not only an artistic response, but also a personal reckoning: a way to process my own failure in breaking free from these inherited wounds.

Each generation carries its own burden. But if this toxic cycle is to end, I believe it must start with ours.

📑 Story synopsis
A Chinese mother arrives in London for her daughter’s graduation—only to be met with distance, silence, and a hidden rebellion. Over the course of one surreal night, she’s pulled back into memories of her own youth, forced to face the generational wounds she never meant to pass down.

🏆 Film festivals submissions
We will submit Wounds to eleven carefully selected film festivals across the UK, Europe, and North America, in hopes of reaching a wider audience and sparking meaningful conversations.
