About us
COVID-19 has been a difficult period for everyone affiliated with the club for a number of reasons. At Workington CC we have been impacted both financially and socially. We have missed out on some of our most profitable months for the function room and the bar which we rely on to provide excellent sporting facilities to the wider community. The Cricket Club not only hosts many of the senior and junior teams in Workington but it also acts as a venue for the Workington Park Run, Allerdale Girls football team and the learn to run club. We haven’t been able to compete in the Cumbrian Cricket League in which our first team was aiming to set a competitive challenge of taking back the title from Carlisle CC. As a result of the league cancellation we have had to make the difficult decision of terminating the contract of our overseas professional for the season Sri Lankan batsman Savin Gunasekera. So the pandemic really has had a large effect on our club which is run by volunteers who have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the club can survive and has the foundations set up to help us through this tough period. However we need your help to generate extra income.
What will we use the money raised for?
We understand Government guidance is rapidly changing and if the ‘R’ value continues to fall we may see our club re-opening in a socially distant manner. Therefore, we want to ensure our staff have the correct PPE available to them and arrangements are in place in order to allow the club to abide to Government guidelines. The safety of our staff and all of our members is paramount to us and we want to ensure the club can reopen to provide a much needed exercise facility to boost the morale of the local community but all be it in a safe manner and when ready to do so.
In the long term we intend to use the donations to help buy cricket equipment for our junior and senior teams and help cover the cost of ground and clubhouse maintenance. But also to cover the financial impact of the months were we have had virtually no income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the club has a sustainable future.
When does the challenge start?
We will be starting the challenge on Monday 25th May in which we will have a week to complete the distance of approximately 588 miles. With the challenge ending on Sunday 31st May at 10pm. Any additional miles will also be logged to see how far our participants can challenge themselves!
