Woolverstone Sailability Project

RCN 1210807, Ipswich

The Woolverstone Project provides accessible boating opportunities for disabled people of any age on the River Orwell and at Alton Water in Suffolk. This includes Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools, families of those with any form of disability, individuals and groups with any needs that would otherwise prevent them getting on the water.

The purpose of the Woolverstone Project is to provide accessible boating opportunities for disabled people of any age on the River Orwell and at Alton Water in Suffolk. With specially adapted boats, trained and qualified instructors and volunteers and a hoist, no severity of disability is a barrier to participation. One of the boats we use is called a Wheelyboat and this is completely accessible and allows people in wheelchairs to get on the water and even to operate the boat.

However, the Project is now running at overcapacity for its accessible water-based activities. We therefore need to acquire a second Wheelyboat to reach out to even more people and groups especially those in wheelchairs. In 2024 The Woolverstone Project ran more than 240 sessions equating to 1,768 individual sailing experiences. The Wheelyboat was used for most of these sessions.
