Woman Up (WU) began in 2014 on the back of several campaigns against sexualisation of women in the media. A team of women decided to create 1 positive event that would bring together a host of campaigners, giving platforms to share their stories with other women. It aimed to inspire and empower.
The event ran in Carlisle and was a roaring success so we did events in Stockton, Brighton, London, York and again in Carlisle in 2015, 2018 and then again in 2022. Over 8 years, WU has welcomed over 100 speakers & approx. 500 women have attended events but we know we can do so much more.
WU has welcomed women to its line-ups who have never spoken on a public platform all the way to famous speakers such as Caroline Lucas and Vera Baird. WU has offered interactive sessions, workshops, plays, poetry, exhibitions and dancing.
The 2022 event was a phenomenal success and feedback has shown that people love the concept and want the team to do so much more. We have had several messages asking us to do more events and for more collaborations. It is so exciting and we cannot wait, we are bursting with ideas for future WU events. We will also work with young women to empower them to create their own events and build confidence amongst younger girls.
WU has done all of our previous work on a very small amount of unrestricted funds donated by a campaign group in 2014. WU has managed to put on events through good will of speakers waiving fees and by working in collaboration with organisations such as Tullie House Museum and Pinc.
Going forward WU needs to be registered with the Charities Commission & to attract funding for new projects so we can really WOMAN UP! and GO BIG. This will involve a lot of paperwork, meetings and this will cost money. We cannot get on with what we do best until this is done and that's where we need you.
WU is an exciting, varied experience that has unlimited opportunities and we would love your support to get going and stay going.
