Raising money for MS Society Winchester and District
We are fundraising to help towards Winchester and District group to help provide social and emotional care and increase the activity of out members. We currently fund 2 coffee mornings a month which is free to attend, hydro therapy for individuals on to one with a physiotherapist and are always looking for more activities. The hydro-therapy costs a lot per person but is showing to massively increase confidence and movement for people diagnosed with MS. These activities and therapies are costly but invaluable to those with MS that I support. Also due to our age and sex, people diagnosed with MS are known to be the poorest out of all disabilities, reasons for this include,
- Increased cost of living: People with MS may face increased costs of living.
- Increased cost of care: MS can have high healthcare costs.
- Reduced capacity for employment: MS can impact a person's ability to work.
- Delayed or low-quality care: People with MS may delay treatment or use low- quality care due to high costs.
- Relocating: Some people with MS may relocate to be closer to MS treatment centers. (Wessex Neurological unit in Southampton is our local one)
- Obtaining grants or loans: Many people with MS obtain grants or loans from others to cover costs.
- Some other factors that can contribute to poverty among people with MS include:
- Cognitive impairment - is a high-risk factor for poverty among people with MS.
- Length of time with MS - People who have had MS for a long time are more likely to have lower incomes.
- Age - Poverty levels are higher among working-age adults, especially younger adults
