Further than local memory, Williton allotments was located behind Williton School, just off Bridge Street in the heart of Williton. The then council sold the land for housing where St Peters close is now located. At the same time a local landowner agreed that Allotments could sit on his land to the East of Williton, with a lease agreement in place and private arrangement paid annual which was formed in 2006. Since this date it has seen many local families produce fruit and veg ever since as plot holders.
With circumstances out of the landlords control, we now find ourselves in the position to potentially lose the Allotments, unless we are able to raise monies to purchase the land in which the Allotment sits. Thus, securing the site taking it out of private holding, then placed into a Co-operative Society, so it can remain in the community for generations to come. We also have the opportunity to purchase adjoining land that will expand the allotment size, making a wildlife pond and communal area. This expansion will help fill the void of all the other council owned Allotments being closed, or lost to the Bristol Channel through coastal erosion and thus reduce waiting lists we currently have within the community. The purchase of this extra land will also enable the creation of a large pond, nature reserve and communal area as well as a further 20+ plot holders.
We have taken steps to make sure Williton Allotment stays in the community, and so cannot be sold off for housing. This means we are now members of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for auditing and the formation of a Co-operative Society , which makes Williton Allotments LIMITED and is authorized under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.
We will be applying for grants from a broad section but will really need your help in reaching this goal.
