Help Us Launch Who Cares Calls – A Lifeline for Independent Living
The Reality of Aging Alone
Catherine lived independently in her own home. At 74 years old, Catherine fell in her kitchen while trying to close a window. She lay undiscovered for 19 hours until her neighbour eventually raised the alarm. Catherine was taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered that she had broken her hip and her arm; she was dehydrated, had developed pneumonia, and later experienced delirium. Catherine remained in the hospital for six weeks before being discharged to a nursing home, where she required full care and had a very poor prognosis.
Catherine's story doesn’t end here. She began to recover and, over the next twelve months, started relearning her lost skills. She progressed so well that she was able to move from the nursing unit to the residential unit. After another six months, she required no support at all. Eighteen months after her fall, Catherine was physically well enough to return home. However, psychologically, she would never recover. She became so frightened of falling again that she chose to remain in the nursing home, costing her over £900 per week. Sadly, Catherine stayed at the nursing home for more than seven years before passing away in 2020.
As a registered nurse who has spent years working in nursing homes across Northeast England, I have seen Catherine’s story repeated countless times. The heartbreak of losing independence, the financial strain of long-term care, and the emotional toll on families are issues that many face.
A Broken System in Need of Solutions
Social care is an essential service, but it is massively oversubscribed. In 2023, the NHS estimated that up to 40% of hospital delays were due to patients waiting for a social care package. This means that thousands of people are left in hospital beds, not because they are too ill to leave, but because there is no system in place to support them at home.
As someone with an elderly mother who lives alone, I understand the fear and helplessness that comes with knowing a loved one is at risk. My mother values her independence, but she also needs reassurance and safety. Calling her four times a day would ease my worry, but she prefers to live her life without constant check-ins. She is fiercely independent, like so many others, and I respect that.
This struggle led to an idea…

Why Who Cares Calls Matters
Catherine’s story is a stark reminder that a fall, an accident, or a health crisis can change everything in an instant. For many, the fear of being left alone is just as distressing as the physical injuries they endure.
A service like Who Cares Calls could have made a world of difference for Catherine. It could have ensured that someone checked on her that day, potentially preventing her 19-hour wait for help. It could have reassured her and her family that support was available without compromising her independence
