0At the Whitby Lobster Hatchery, we aim to release juvenile lobsters into the ocean this will conserve lobster populations, helping to maintain the ecological balance and protect the marine environment into the future.
Our fishing heritage and marine environment is under threat from overexploitation with little conservation measures currently in place. Recent mass mortality events have highlighted the need of protecting these commercially, socially, and environmental important lobster populations.
Whitby is the third largest lobster fishery in Europe. Without our solution the local fishing industry and over 150 jobs could be lost along with a rich, historic, and important heritage. Our solution aims to release 100,000 juvenile lobsters per year back into the ocean as a measure to offset the number of lobsters landed.
Alongside the conservation work we aim to inspire, educate and reconnect people especially young people with native marine biodiversity. Offering workshops for school groups, outreach programs and education. Celebrating the themes of native marine wildlife, conservations, sustainable seafood and maritime heritage.
