About Whit Friday
The Whit Friday band competitions date back as far as the late 1800s, with some claiming they originated in Stalybridge and Mossley, then later crossing over to Uppermill.
Dubbed 'The greatest free show on Earth' these traditions remain as strong as ever, and for the last few years the Mossley contest has been held at Seel Park, home of Mossley AFC. We attracted a record number of bands in 2024 and we are hoping to do the same again this year. This year's contest will be held on Friday 13th June, 2025.
Keeping traditions alive
The contests remain primarily due to the dedicated time and effort put in by volunteers at each venue, whose key aims are making sure that the contests do not disappear in their communities. Sadly, each year the contests are becoming increasingly at risk, due to rising costs and lack of volunteers. To fund the prize money , stage, caravans and other costs, we are hoping to raise £ 3000 towards the cost of the event.
Your kind donations will help us to ensure that these wonderful and unique age-old traditions remain in our communities.
Thank you, Mossley Band Contest team.
