The War Memorial Management Committee is formed from users of the facilities, members of the public of Watchet and a trustee representative. Our role is to manage the ground and pavilion for the benefit of the town and to safeguard it's future. Funding is via rent from users and grant aid, plus assistance in kind from the Town Council, who are the trustees. The pavilion was built in 1929 in memory of those sportsmen from Watchet who died in WW1. The building is old and needs a lot of maintenance which we, the committee, cannot presently afford. Due to COVID there has been very little income while the building continues to deteriorate. Presently we have quotes amounting to £15,000 for necessary repair work. We do, of course, still have overheads such as utilities and insurance.
The ground has been the home of Watchet Cricket and Football Clubs for many years. The football club won the Somerset Premier League for the first time in 2016/17. Harold Gimblett played cricket for Watchet, Somerset and England. And Alan Pearse and Haydyn Sully, both Watchet cricketers, played for Somerset
The ground also hosts the annual Carnival Fete,in late July being the culmination of the Carnival weekend.
The ground is owned by the town for recreation and it's value cannot be underestimated.
