The aim of this fundraiser is to fund the costs associated with volunteering at the Lao NGO MITTAPHAP-Saelao,tackling prostitution and drugs

by Kale Mwatsahu-Sangale in Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

In this fundraiser I aim to raise funds to finance the cost of 3-weeks of volunteering at Vang Vieng, Laos.

My Background:

I am a second year Politics and Sociology student at the University of Cambridge. Once I have completed by Undergraduate degree, I hope to train as a Human Rights Barrister advocating on behalf of underprivileged communities. Originally from Kenya, I have witnessed the transformative power of education. Like Kenya, Laos is a canvas of beautiful landscapes and a wealth of culture. Unfortunately also like Kenya, Laos faces the all too real problem of poverty and deprivation. Unlike Kenya however, Laos often gets overlooked due to its proximity to cheaper and more popular neighbours. It is because of this that I feel that I could be a suitable advocate for those residing in the Vang Vieng community.

MITTAPHAP-Saelao project aims to help children in Laos achieve higher education, by teaching 200 students a day English for free. This opens avenues for higher education abroad, and service sector tourism jobs. For young girls, this grants them alternative means of income helping them avoid prostitution. As well as teaching English, I would help develop promotional material for further fundraising, help in the rice fields which is one of Laos’s largest exports, and assist in childcare so that mothers of young children are able to work during the day. It is my hope that this will increase the accessibility to education and employment of both women and girls. I intend on spending 21-days in Laos.

The associated costs of this fundraising will include my flight to Vientiane, food and accommodation. Thanks to my local host Peter, the cost of both food and accommodation will be below that of a low-budget tourist, so the flight ticket makes up the majority of the cost. As this project relies on community engagement and love lessons, it is important that volunteers are able to physically be in the location.
