What you will be doing

We are looking for volunteers to join us on regular Tuesday or Thursday sessions (both run from 10.00-14.00) to develop plots and grow produce to supply our local community shop . There is flexibilty to work for shorter or longer periods around those time slots depending on what suits you.

You will be guided by regular members who will train you in creating and maintaining the plot by composting, weeding, propagating, planting, crop protection, pruning and harvesting. If you are new to horticulture it is a great opportunity to learn new skills but be aware it's tough work and you will get dirty so wear appropriate clothes and wear sunscreen and a hat in summer.  The crops will change throughout the year and you'll have the opportunity to try growing lots of different fruit and vegetables.  All seed, plants and tools required for the job will be provided.

This is one project on a site that is committed to raising awareness of environmental issues and sustainabilty and you will have access to members putting that into practice in the forest garden, the herb garden, orchard and bee hives who will be vary happy to share their knowledge and skills.

This is a great way to get fit and healthy working outdoors in an vibrant  social community of SLI members and local charities and community groups.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic and passionate about the local community and environment.  There are no prior skills required for this role.

What difference this will make

Volunteering on this project will help provide access to fresh food and vegetables to families who are struggling financially and at risk of food poverty and support the ideal that no child should go hungry.

Learning about sustainable gardening, reducing waste, conserving water, supporting pollinators, birds and insects and promoting biodiversity, using organic materials and engaging in urban gardening, spending time outdoors and connecting with nature whilst growing food is likely to be beneficial to your physical and mental health.

Being part of the Marlpit Community Garden, we hope you will learn new skills, exchange ideas and build relationships.

What to bring
