Project Issues:
Salford's Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, primarily Yiddish-speaking with English as a second language, faces a profound mental health crisis affecting adults (18+).
Pre-existing social isolation, intensified by the pandemic, is compounded by cultural stigma surrounding mental health, creating a reluctance to seek help. Financial instability, due to rising living costs and limited employment opportunities, further exacerbates emotional distress.
Inability to access mainstream provisions, coupled with a lack of culturally sensitive mental health services, leaves many vulnerable individuals without adequate care. These issues create a cycle of despair, hindering recovery and community well-being.
Project Description:
This 12-month initiative will deliver comprehensive, culturally tailored mental health services to the Yiddish-speaking Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Salford. We will:
- Provide 180 hours of targeted small-group talking therapies, facilitated by qualified therapists with expertise in addressing community-specific needs.
- Weekly 90-minute support groups will cultivate peer connection and shared understanding, while dedicated advice and advocacy services will empower individuals to navigate complex support systems.
- A rigorous Mentoring Program will train 20 volunteers to offer personalized, empathetic support.
- Monthly two-hour workshops will equip participants with essential coping strategies, resilience-building techniques, and tools for promoting mental well-being.
- Monthly social and cultural activities will actively combat isolation and foster robust community integration.
