Upcott Field is a piece of land given to the residents of Cullompton by the Upcott family in 1913 to commemorate JS Upcott, ancestor of William Upcott, Cullompton cloth merchant.
The Idea: Imagine a space where families come together, children explore and play, elderly people and those less able, enjoy being outdoors, perhaps meeting old and making new friends, and where nature thrives. A place designed for everyone in our community to enjoy, connect, and unwind. We’re excited to announce plans to make this vision a reality at Upcott Field in Cullompton, and we need YOUR support to bring it to life!
Cullompton Town Council has already committed £100,000 to this transformative project towards upgrades like new play equipment, a dedicated youth area, a more level, more versatile sports field, a meandering path, native planting to encourage wildlife, and a trim trail to promote activity and a healthier lifestyle. The £100,000 isn't enough to provide all of these improvements and facilities so, we’re reaching out for an additional £20,000 from the public, local businesses and grant givers. Together, we can create a space that truly reflects Cullompton’s spirit and commitment to community wellbeing.
Estimated Costs:
In order to include all the improvements, we have estimated a cost of £150,000. This includes the following items, as well as some additional costs for groundworks, surfacing, installation and planting.
Youth Area: shelter, basketball hoop, gym bars, surfacing & installation: £30,000
Sports Pitch Improvements: £5,000
Footpath - Compacted crushed stone or similar: £10,000
Trim trail equipment, surfacing & installation: £10,000
New seating with surface & installation: £5,000
New play mound with slide, rope climber & bridge or tunnel: £15,000
Native tree & shrub planting including wild flowers: £3,000
New play equipment, surfacing & installation: £50,000
We are applying for grants for certain parts of the project but are aware that, over recent years, demand for grant funding has significantly increased and it is now much more difficult to secure grant funding than previously.
We are therefore reaching out to the community to help fund some of the work and are aiming to raise £20,000 towards new play equipment. Items of new play equipment are likely to include the following:-
• Kompan Spacenet: £11,500
• Inclusive Boat-swing:- Sutcliffe Play: £872
• New swing seat: regular: £276
• Birds Nest Swing: Huck Play: £1,073
• Kompan spinner bowl: £1,270
• Eibe Floor Trampoline: £4,093
• Accessible picnic table: £770
• Bench: without back: £433
Total £20,287
Tree Planting: We wanted to get the community involved and felt that tree planting was a good way of doing this. We were successful in applying for a tree pack from the Woodland Trust containing 105 saplings (these include oak, mountain ash, silver birch, hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel) which will help increase biodiversity and nature. These have were planted with children from a local primary school and also during a community tree planting session in late November.
