TURBINE follows a rising rock band, propelled into even larger fame after controversy involving the band’s outspoken lead guitarist ignites a social media firestorm. The film is a high tension satire about cancel culture, fame and the blurred line between authenticity and performance in today’s social media driven music industry. Turbine is rooted in a moment that feels present, where our real selves become intertwined with the personas we cannot help but curate. It’s a reflection on the absurdity of it all, but there’s a joy in that absurdity, and I want Turbine to capture that balance. It’s a critique, but one that carries a sense of humour, embracing the chaos of modern self-presentation.
The film will be 20 minutes long and shot at The Qube West. I have a fantastic cast and crew who have worked tremendously hard already in the film’s pre production stage. I am proud to have a team that is made up of talented and passionate people from all backgrounds.
As the director, I am committed to having a team that is at least 50% female. While the industry has recently started taking action to support female filmmakers, many technical departments - such as grips, sparks and camera - remain almost completely male. This film is an opportunity for female crew members who are keen on getting into an industry and haven't had the opportunity to yet or who have been overlooked by an industry that tends to ignore women.
I would be most grateful for any contribution possible, even the smallest of donations would make a difference.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Stella Jopling and the rest of the Turbine crew.
