Aim: We are establishing the UK's first and only museum of girlhood to honour the ordinary lives of women and girls and to promote equality.
We are a fun heritage and cultural organisation with a serious agenda. We use cultural consumer icons from the recent past (such as Barbie and Bratz dolls) to educate the public.
We are setting up a permanent exhibition of recreated girls' bedrooms, from the 1960s to the 2000s, depicting the growth of young women from babyhood to adolescence in different eras. This nostalgic look at the past allows people of all ages to reminisce about their childhood and provokes inter-generational discussion. It's fun for visitors to take that trip down memory lane and to explain, "I had that duvet set" (or that doll, or that dress). We foremost want to create a vibrant space for visitors to come and enjoy.
Underlying the fun visitor experience, we also expose the sexism and inequalities that generations of women and girls have experienced. We use education to teach about the subservience of women and girls in our recent past; about gender-based violence and the fact that women have largely been culturally invisible until now.
We work from a feminist agenda counter this inequality and address this cultural imbalance. We empower women and girls with inspiring stories of remarkable, pioneering women throughout the ages. We celebrate women's achievements and highlight their many contributions to the world.
We also provide advocacy and support through groups for women and girls, especially reaching out to the most disenfranchised groups, such as girls experiencing poverty; those from deprived areas; recent immigrants; women from black and ethnic minorities; and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
We reject the burden of beauty promoted by the media (especially social media). Instead, we build confidence by challenging the "male gaze"and the notion that women and girls bear a responsibility to look pretty. We focus instead on their character, values, skills and abilities rather than on how they look. We do this through education and discussion of our objects, such as our huge range of teen fashion dolls - Sindy, Barbie, Bratz, LOL, Mary Quant, Tuesday Taylor etc.
We also have a huge collection of girls' comic annuals, many from Scottish publisher, DC Thomson. We have a large collection of vintage and designer mannequins. We have the largest collection of themed duvet sets.
Our museum is designed to appeal to the 5 senses and we aim to be accessible to all and inclusive in our activities.
