Welcome to the Newquay Trenance Community Forest Project!

Introduction:

Newquay has one of the lowest canopy cover areas in Cornwall. As the urgency to address environmental challenges intensifies, the value of planting trees, particularly in urban areas is more important than ever. In Newquay the importance of urban green spaces is also increasingly recognised due to the many benefits that trees provide.

These include:

  • Improving air quality
  • Reducing urban heat
  • Reducing flooding
  • Increasing biodiversity
  • Increasing mental and physical health

Project Overview:

The Trenance Community Forest Project is looking to transform an underutilised piece of land that is owned by Cornwall Council. The aim is turn Trenance into an asset for nature and the community. By planting 1,000 native trees around existing walkways, we can join up the fragmented canopy, increase nature connectivity and create a beautiful community forest for one and all to enjoy!

Location and Design:

The Trenance, Newquay site has been split into three planting areas; The Orchard, The Grove, and The GladeThe site design ensures that existing paths are not impacted by the planting.

We will be planting a mixture of whips and standard trees at the site. Whips are small young trees approximately 0.5 – 1.0m tall, they establish quickly after planting. Standard trees are more mature trees approximately 1.5m tall to provide immediate structure and visual impact.

The Orchard:

The Orchard has been identified as a prime location for fruiting species as it is an area that gets full sun and is less exposed to the wind. This will optimise the condition for fruiting species and improve the productivity of the selected species. The planting area is able to host around 250 trees, 30 of which will be more mature fruiting species with the remaining tree mix consisting of whips.

The Grove and The Glade:

The Grove is well positioned to receive up to 250 native tree whips and the Glade is able to receive up to 500 tree whips. Up to 10 standard trees will also be strategically planted to provide age diversity to the planting scheme and increase the long term resilience of the scheme.
