Help me invest in equipment for my glass recycling project; creating homeware and jewellery from household glass waste.

 New stretch target

I can't quite believe it, I've extended my Stretch Target again to the final Crowdmatch Milestone!

This will allow me to expand my studio space to a more appropriate size and invest in an even larger kiln meaning I can get even more recycled glass eco products out to you!

Hi, I’m Trejayne!

I started working with glass 5 years ago at the tradition steeped Bristol Blue Glass studio. I predominantly trained in lamp working (an open flame) and kiln crafting with a brief foray into furnace based ‘glass blowing’.

I focus mainly on glass jewellery inspired by popular culture references from film, anime and video games.

Setting up through the Pandemic has lead me to focus solely on e-commerce allowing me to reach an international audience, predominantly through TikTok.

My Studio

My fully self-funded glass studio has seen a handful of iterations. Starting in a spare bedroom (cue burns in the carpet), then a tiny shed in a fishing village (zero space or ventilation), upgraded to the outbuilding of a farmers cottage (a bit too much space and ventilation…) before making the move to East Lothian. My studio is set up in a portacabin at The Mart in East Linton and as of this month (March ’22) I’ve moved to a new and improved unit on the same site.

Going Green

When restarting my studio in its various forms and locations I was always conscious to source green power, sustainable materials and to be as conscious as was practical in setting up my business. The glass industry has a pretty bad rep environmentally speaking and this is something I’ve constantly challenged and fought to improve.

To this end my ideal has always been to arrive at glass recycling. This is something that is (to me) surprisingly uncommon and there is an obvious lack of research or information on the topic. Because of this I’ve spent the last 3 years developing a method for recycling glass which doesn’t call for various additions, rendering the finished products un-recyclable.

Proof of Concept

So far, with a hand 'pulveriser' and my manual pilot kiln, I have been able to make two successful prototype pieces. Butter beer bottles recycled into a glass Chocolate Frog inspired by Harry Potter and Neals Yard blue medicine bottles recycled into a glass San’s Dagger inspired by Princess Mononoke.

However, to make this commercially viable I need to be able to increase my production from one or two pieces per day and to do that I need an industrial sized kiln and an automated glass crusher.

I’ve sourced a variety of suitable kilns increasing in size depending on how well the crowdfunding raise performs. The glass crusher I've found is actually targeted at the hospitality industry but the perfect size for my production needs.

I’ve sourced a variety of suitable kilns (of varying sizes). Obtaining these pieces of equipment is dependent on the success of this crowdfunding effort.

What’s next?

Taking my research experiments to commercial success. With these equipment upgrades I’ll be able to launch my anticipated glass recycling project while increasing my potential output and adding a completely new range of products to my catalogue; homeware, an area that has always been of interest to me and one which has been mostly off limits due to the limitations of my equipment.

I have lined up some potential collaborations with other producers, such as spirits and cosmetics companies, to collect their waste glass and be able to recycle them into new eco products.

Why it matters

I hope to be able to inspire individuals and companies, through local drop offs and national collaborations, to be conscious of their consumption and recycling. Glassmaking is a dying craft and I want to use and adapt the traditional skills I’ve learned to help modernise the industry, realise its green potential and save it from becoming obsolete.

Creative Scotland Crowdmatch

My project is part of the Creative Scotland Crowdmatch - I'm 1 of 20 shortlisted creative projects in Scotland - that have the opportunity to win a share of £80,000 in match funding, up to £10,000.

The match funding is based on hitting milestones as shown below, I’m aiming to hit milestone 3 to cover the crusher and new kiln needed to launch this project.

Rewards

So I’ve set up my rewards as my Pop Culture Collection of jewellery. Inspired (predominantly) by anime you can see images below on my pitch page or check them out on my website before deciding which you’d like to have. They are listed at a discounted rate and with FREE SHIPPING worldwide.

The two recycled prototype pieces are also available - quick note here that depending on the size of kiln I can upgrade to will impact how quickly I can fulfil these!

I’m also offering up a limited number of bespoke jewellery packages where you can have a one to one consultation with me to choose your bespoke colours for full sized beaded bracelet or necklace.

Lastly, and mostly just for fun, I'm offering you the chance to have the Kiln or Crusher named after you (or a different name of your choosing) and mention you in any TikTok video or social post that features the Kiln or Crusher!

TL;DR

In short, I need a proper glass crusher and a much bigger kiln to bring my glass recycling project to life, add homeware range to my offering and realise the green potential of the glass industry.

Please support by enjoying my popular culture inspired jewellery, having a bespoke necklace or bracelet made for you or being the first to get ahold of my recycled items, which are exclusive to Crowdfunder.

Thanks so much!
