Caring for Trees in Shoreham by Sea & Southwick

The role varies with the seasons and weather conditions as well as the age of the trees but broadly you will be weeding, mulching or watering trees to help them get established. In some locations long sleeves and and trousers are best because of nettles etc. We provide gloves if you do not have any. 

Enthusiasm and passion are important, but its also important you are not bothered being outdoors working in the environment if its raining! Good team working is useful too. You will learn things about trees you never knew and get to be part of helping establish a future woodland that you and your children can enjoy in the future!  

You are helping young woodland trees get established. Those trees will be improving the quality of air and the biodiversity in the area, as well as being appreciated by the community for years to come. You will also be helping to make a difference helping tackling climate change and reducing the impact on the environment this has, as well as helping TreeAction become a force for environmental good in the UK.Many of our volunteers also find this connection with the environment outdoors very therapeutic and a great stress buster. 

Long sleeve shirts or Ts and long trousers are recommended. If you have your own gardening gloves bring those but we have some if not. Unless there is high certainty of no rain, bring rainproof clothing just in case. We will provide water and fruit juices to drink.  

Adur Rec is one of four sites in the area where support is needed. Adur Rec is close to Shoreham by Sea town centre and the car park is just over the bridge.  It is about 15-20 minutes walk from Shoreham by Sea train station. 

Other trees need maintenance and care at Middle Road Recreation Ground, and Southwick Recreations Ground and Buckingham Park. 

On the agreed day and time for the maintenance we will provide the tools needed. In the case of watering, rolling canisters that can be filled with water up to 40 litres and rolled to the trees. Mulch, stakes and guards are supplied to protect the trees when this is required. Sometimes the tall growth needs a strimmer which we provide, as well as gloves and goggles.

We will provide drinking water, fruit juice options and biscuits or cakes. 

There are public toilets on the car park. 

In theory,  the trees are wheelchair accessible, but bearing in mind its over grass and the water buts will need to be pulled, assistance may be required.
