What you will be doing
Role:
Supporting and developing the awareness of Tree Action's work in schools and public sites in Sussex and raising funds to support the development of tree planting and biodiversity projects for schools .
Since 2019 we have raised £50,000 and used this to deliver 7 school tree planting projects in Sussex with 20 - 50 trees per school, and are looking to do more community projects on public land.
Yet, we are still just 20 part time volunteers with no paid staff!
We've been able to deliver these projects partly thanks to funding support of Aviva staff and some amazing people who have given their time for free.
We want to deliver more school and public land tree planting projects and have a plan to hire a part time Volunteer Co-ordinator, as well as other key roles in Enviromental Conservation and Management so we can do this. We therefore need alot of help with fundraising!
This role would work with the volunteer Director to:
- Help identify suitable businesses in the area that have the potential to make small - medium sized regular donations
- Represent us in the community talking about what we do to members of the public and signing up people to be donors.
- Help us to develop and implement the fundraising strategy.
What we are looking for
Ideally you will:
- Have some fundraising experience
- Have experience of developing external relationships.
- Be used to working as part of a team and managing to deadlines.
- Be a team player.
- Comfortable dealing with members of the public and/or speaking to businesses.
- Have good communication skills.
- Have good attention to detail.
- Be able to write persuasively.
What difference this will make
Schools:
Many schools just do not have the time and resource to organise tree planting projects on site themselves for their students. If we are able to grow we are able to fund and deliver more projects for more schools which has two major impacts:
A. The environment and biodiversity of the area will be immediately improved, reducing carbon emissions
and
B. Young people will get to learn more about the environment and the role trees play in nature, and about sustainability, getting outdoors during school time and looking after their trees which they can feel responsible as part of their eco learning.
Communities:
We are approached by families interested in getting their children involved at our maintenance projects on public sites either because they feel they are disconnected from the natural world, or have special education needs, or because their children want to notch up some hours towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award! Although we get given space to plant trees by the local authorities, we have to look after the trees ourselves and receive no funding from them, so helping us means we can grow our outreach to families and individuals who would like to get involved in our projects and give something back to the environment.
What to bring
If you are fundraising outdoors its best to bring waterproofs. We will cover costs of food and refreshments when needed on the day.
Accessibility
We are open to someone working from home in this role, or to join one of the team in a co-working space.
