On the 31st July 2022 we'd raised £710 with 16 supporters in 28 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
Sixteen years ago I spent 3 months volunteering in Western Kenya. Through this, I met my good friend Helen Oyiera, who was working with the same charity at the time. We have remained steadfast friends since then, despite the time and distance and I have witnessed the relentless efforts and energy she has spent supporting vulnerable children and disadvantaged residents in her community, whilst single-handedly raising her three children.
Her eldest child, Kelsey, has now graduated from the local school and succeeded in winning a place at the prestigious Nairobi Medical Training College to study for a Diploma in Orthopaedic Technology, over 400km away. This course will qualify her to care for those needing orthopaedic treatment, and, with the diploma, Kelsey would love to return home to Kakamega County to use her skills there. Below are photos Helen sent to give an example of the situations and communities Kelsey would be working with if she graduates. Permissions for their use was given.
Unfortunately the cost of the course, travel and accommodation in the capital city are high. The 3 year course fees alone are £1500. Without any support it is very unlikely she will be able to complete it.
I am setting up this page in the hope that we can raise enough funds to directly support Kelsey achieve her dream of being able to help people living with disabilities, in her community in rural Kenya.
