Village Foundations has been working in Mwanyama Village for around 3 years now, having previously worked in other parts of Malawi for over 15 years.
Running a Clinic is a big challenge in this tropical climate, which brings with it many different diseases and illnesses such as diarrhoea, malaria, bilharzia, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, to mention but a few.
Malawi is a poor country (constantly rated in the top 5 poorest countries in the world) with a very basic and limited healthcare system, not affordable to the majority of citizens. Village Foundations provides a free healthcare service and attracts many poor and sick people from the surrounding villages. We are also a recognised and recommended facility by the Malawi Governments Ministry of Health.
Covid-19 has added a new challenge and risk to the work, which includes a reduction in charitable giving + the threat Covid-19 could pose to our clinic operations, including the extra PPE and different measures we have in place.
We believe that in these challenging times, working together, we become stronger, and so a humanitarian response is being seen by communities all over the world, working together to help and care for those in need. whether it be food parcels, emotional support, medical aid or anything else, we are caring for one another and looking out for each other.
Volunteer groups are springing up to tackle the problems faced in all communities – but they need urgent support. That's where we come in.
We would like to ensure that the toilet facility is not going to prevent people from receiving healing, treatment and making full recoveries.
The current toilets are very run down and could add to the healthcare crisis.
It also is basically a hole in the ground, not too far away from a borehole where people drink the water that comes from the ground.
We cannot continue to risk polluting the ground and offering sub-standard facilities.
We need your help to build a brand new composting toilet.
The village primary school has recently had a new composting toilet installed and the difference is incredible.
Composting toilets are clean, odour free and produce no waste.
It is not feasible to have running water/flushing toilets, as the waste would still pollute somewhere, either the ground or the lake. There is no sewer system here.
With your donation, we can complete this important phase in the life of the crucial work of the Clinic in Mwanyama Village, Nkhudzi Bay, Mangochi District, Malawi.
